A time for having fun and enjoying yourself in costume.
A time for trick-or-treating in costume and hoping for a shipload of candy.
A time for a witch's sabbath, according to some cultures.
Yes, things would become interesting on All Hallows Eve at Ichiban High that year, as a combination of all three, with a stronger helping of the first two, pervaded the air.
True, Pretty Cure could have some fun on that day.
But at the same time, they had to be vigilant.
Because they had been tipped off about a new flunkie of Thirteen coming shortly.
And would it ever be quite a Halloween match!

"Vigilia di ognissanti - Halloween"
The classrooms were full of colorful costumes on All Hallows Eve, and the classes of Miss Sampson and Miss Kondo were quite varied.
For example, in Miss Sampson's class, Ryan Lee was dressed as Madoka Kaname from Madoka Magica, in her magical girl costume.
Kendra Cocolova was dressed as Makie Sasaki from Negima! in her Mahora Academy summer uniform.
Rica Watson was dressed as Superman in his Action Comics reboot costume (and, as we all know, even if it doesn't come with spandex tights a Superman costume just isn't a Superman costume without that red cape and S insignia).
And Kaitlyn Oh was dressed as Elmina from Petite Princess Yucie.
Miss Sampson herself was dressed as a witch. "As you may know, Halloween is a time when everyone, myself included, dresses up in costumes and goes around collecting candy. Believe me, I go trick-or-treating, too. And I'm three times as old as you are!
"Of course, these traditions have got to start somewhere. Miss Cocolova?"
Kendra said, "According to tradition, dead souls walked the Earth until All Saints Day, and All Hallows Eve was their last chance to seek vengeance on their enemies before crossing over. To avoid being recognised by any soul they may have wronged in the past, people would dress up in costumes to hide their identities."
Miss Sampson said, "Very good, Kendra! And how did the jack-o-lanterns fall into the holiday? Miss Oh?"
Kaitlyn said, "Jack-o-lanterns represented those lost souls in purgatory, and in Great Britain they were originally made from human skulls in graveyards, not the pumpkins we modern-day folk are more used to."
Miss Sampson said, "Right again! As for trick-or-treating… Miss Watson?"
Rica said, "The practice has its origins in the old custom of baking and sharing soul cakes. Initially, it was a way to pray for those poor souls in purgatory. This primitive form of trick-or-treating was mentioned by the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, in his 1593 comedy, The Two Gentlemen of Verona."
Meanwhile, Miss Kondo's class was just as colorfully dressed.
Susan Chan was dressed as Cinderella in her silver gown from the Disney animated classic.
Kelly Chiba was dressed as Cure March.
Allie Sue Cooper was dressed as a bedsheet ghost.
Juanita Cruz was dressed as Inusaka Keno Tanetomo, one of the title characters of the Japanese serial, Legend of Eight Samurai.
And Beryl D. Kong was dressed as Konata Izumi from Lucky Star.
Allie Sue said, "Of course, Halloween had its pagan roots. The Celts had a festival at the end of summer called Samhain. At one point, the bonfire festivals held in the Celtic region around this time were believed to involve human sacrifice."
Miss Kondo said, "Very… creepy."
Susan said, "The modern imagery of Halloween has arisen from national customs, Gothic and horror literary works such as Frankenstein (or, The Modern Prometheus) and Dracula, and the Universal monster movies of old, including The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, and The Mummy."
Kelly said, "Black, orange, and purple are the most recognizable colours of Halloween, and themes involving death, evil, the occult, and mythical monsters tend to be prevalent."
Miss Sampson continued, "Do remember that a costume ball will be held in the gymnasium of this school at 9PM tonight. Be sure to come in your Halloween costume, if you have one this year.
"Ah, yes! I think I recognise your costume from Madoka Magica, Miss Lee. Obviously, you're not dressed as a Witch, but your character does have her own Witch form. What was it again? Kriemhild Gretchen?"
"Oh, so you've seen the show. Damn it, I hope I didn't outright spoil a major plot twist… oh, you thought I was talking about an Ojamajo Doremi show, didn't you, Miss Cocolova?"
Kendra said, "Well, actually… yes."
"Why don't you watch it for yourself and see how magical girls and Witches are connected there compared to in Ojamajo Doremi? A word of advanced warning, it's going to get very serious around episode 3, though to say how would spoil a major plot twist."
Rica said, "Miss Sampson, I'm surprised at you! Shouldn't everyone already know, even among those who haven't seen the series yet, that someone loses her head?"
Susan continued, "That said, I'm actually quite surprised most of us aren't dressed too spookily. In fact, there's not a single student here dressed as Kyubey."
Kelly said, "Actually, there's one dressed as Mami Tomoe."
"So I noticed."
Miss Kondo pointed out, "In regards to that, I'm surprised there isn't one who's dressed like Charlotte."
Miss Sampson continued, "There's so many in this school, apparently, who are fans of Madoka Magica."
Rica said, "You're being too damn general, Miss Sampson."
Miss Sampson said, "Yes, I know. There still are some, but we're all entitled to our own fandoms."
Miss Kondo said, "Also, remember that the costume ball takes place in the gymnasium tonight at 9PM. Have fun!"
The bell rang. The students started to shuffle out of the classroom. Susan left with Kelly, accompanying Beryl to her dormitory before rejoining Ryan and Rica.
Once back inside their dormitory, they settled in and began laying out their plans for the night. Rica said, "I think we should go trick-or-treating around 6PM."
Kelly said, "That sounds like a great idea!"
Susan said, "Of course, we should be back here by 7:30, so we can have time to receive other trick-or-treaters."
Ryan said, "I sure hope there's going to be chocolate bars and peanut butter cups… they sure are yummy!"
Rica said, "I'm pretty sure there will be, limey."
Susan said, "We have a bowl of candy prepared for the other trick-or-treaters already. No sampling, Rica!"
Rica said, "I wasn't going to! The candy I'll be getting is more than enough for today!"
Kelly said, "Easy for you to say, Rica; you have one hell of a sweet tooth, and apparently, so does Ryan!"
Ryan said, "Don't worry, Kelly. Rica and I'll be able to keep our sweet teeth under control today. Only two more hours until the fun begins, after all."
Rica said, "I'm not so sure about you, though, considering that you chose a cutesy pink dress for your Halloween costume."
Ryan said, "Looks are deceiving, Rica. My sweet tooth isn't nearly as wild as my cutesy pink dress would have you believe."
Rica said, "I should hope so."
She then took a drink of her frozen orange juice.
Meanwhile, a dark force made its way through Kotaro Fuma's manmade tunnel to Ichiban High.
After the new villain emerged, he said, "Ah, yes… Ichiban High, the alma mater of my greatest enemies.
"Cure Dragon… Cure Fortune… Cure Fang… it would be a pleasure to fight you at any time… and let's not play foul here, I want a CLEAN fight every time."
He then walked into the building and toward the bulletin.
"Today's All Hallows Eve, huh? Trick or treating on campus and then a costume ball at 9PM… for Halloween, I am going as myself."
He then let out a chilling laugh.
"Now don't pig out, you two--the costume ball isn't going to be presented in CinemaScope, after all!"
Kelly's admonishment to Ryan and Rica came after they had come back from trick-or-treating with a shipload of candy.
Rica said, "Don't you worry about us, Kelly! We've got it under control. Susan, go ahead and watch for trick-or-treaters that may come by."
Susan said, "Certainly!"
Ryan said, "I'd volunteer, but I can't talk around other students who may not know who I really am."
"TRICK OR TREAT!"
Obviously, Susan was more talkative around the trick-or-treaters than was Ryan, who made not one noise as the two passed out candy at the door.
Kelly said, "They certainly look prepared to pass out candy."
Rica said, "Hey, watch out for Eileen. She may leave a trick even if you do give her a treat."
Surprisingly, Eileen was better behaved here than at the other doors she stopped at that night.
The hour of the ball finally came.
Everyone was dressed in their Halloween costumes, and some, including Ryan, Susan, and Kelly, wore domino masks decorated to some extent.
One of the pieces played was "Waltz of the Puppet Master" by R. Band. Kelly said, "Listen. That music sounds familiar to me."
Susan said, "I actually don't recognise it."
Kelly said, "I suppose it's because you've never seen the Puppet Master movies?"
Susan said, "No. I haven't seen them."
Kelly said, "For those looking for a good fantasy movie scare, those are the movies to see."
Susan said, "I never noticed."
Kelly said, "Not very big into ghost stories, I see."
Suddenly, Eileen, dressed as Blade from Puppet Master, walked up to the orchestra and yelled, "All right, let's do a number for Rica Watson and Ryan Lee! And I want a spotlight shining on them!"
A single light centered on Rica and Ryan as they started dancing to "Can You Read My Mind?", with Eileen performing the vocals.
Before the singing started Rica removed Ryan's domino mask and said, "I don't think you'll be needing this, Ryan. I'd like to get a good look at your face tonight, as always. Why hide behind a mask when you're sharing a dance with one of your own friends?"
They then started dancing. This continued for about a couple of minutes.
Unknown to everyone, Nobunaga Oda was hiding in the janitorial closet. Dressed as a janitor, he proceeded toward the gym with one thought in mind.
Destroy Pretty Cure.
After removing his janitorial disguise, he burst into the gym as something more youth-oriented ("You Never Can Tell") was being played by the light rock club.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! We are tonight's entertainment. I just want to know one thing: where is Pretty Cure? You know where they are? You know who they are? You know where I can find them? I need to talk to them about something. Just something, a little. No… you know, I'll settle for their friends."
As Nobunaga approached Rica, she yelled, "We're not intimidated by thugs!"
"You know, you reminded me of my brother. I hated him!"
Unknown to Nobunaga, Ryan, Susan, and Kelly had disappeared during the kerfluffle, having detected an evil presence. Meanwhile, Miss Sampson proceeded to knee Nobunaga in the Southern region.
"Why, hello, beautiful! You must be Pretty Cure's teacher. And you look hot! Oh, you look nervous. Is it the scarface? Wanna know how I got it? HEY! ARE YOU LISTENING!?
"So I had a wife. She was hot, like you. She tells me I worry too much. She tells me I need to smile more. She gambles and gets in too deep with some very nice men.
"One day, they cut her up. And we have no money for surgeries. She can't take it. I just want to see her smile again. I just want her to know that I don't give a shit how many scars are on her body.
"So I take a knife to my face and do this to myself, carving up my cheeks, my forehead, even my nose! And you know what? She can't stand the sight of me--she leaves!"
Miss Sampson punched him in the nose. "A little fight in you! I like that!"
"Then you're going to love us."
With that, three figures appeared atop one of the basketball goals (don't ask how they can stand together on top of such a surface.
Nobunaga snarled, "What the HELL are you?"
"The golden warrior, I am Cure Dragon!"
"The silver warrior, I am Cure Fortune!"
"Together we're Pretty Cure!"
"Evil warriors of ill fortune…"
"We shall send you packing!"
"Protecting my friends, I am Cure Fang! Let those who worship evil's might beware my power! The bodyguard's light!"
With these words, they jumped off the basketball goal and landed on the floor of the gymnasium. One of the teachers asked the principal, "Don't you recognise those three? Do you even know who they are?"
The principal said curtly, "Oh, I know who they are: they are Pretty Cure."
"If that's the case," the teacher continued, "then where are Ryan Lee, Susan Chan, and Kelly Chiba at the moment? I thought they were at the dance?"
The principal said, "Oh, they're probably just checking something out and trying to figure out just how someone managed to break into the dance dressed as Nobunaga Oda."
As the Cures slowly approached Oda, Cure Fortune said, "Crashing a ball held by a school and attended by its students? That is very low! I can't forgive such an act of violent disruption!"
Oda said, "And here… we… go."
As Oda lunged at Cure Fang, who ducked, Cure Dragon yelled, "AGH! HE'S GONE PSYCHO!"
Cure Fang said, "Don't tell me he's headed for the showers…"
They ran in and found the place completely empty.
Except, that is, for Nobunaga Oda.
"You've really done it this time…" Cure Dragon snarled as he tried to control himself. There, spraypainted on the wall in kanji, was the word "manko".
Cure Fortune said, "Uh-oh, someone's really going to pay this time…"
Cure Fang said, "Yeah, prepare for a rage that can only be generated by the C word…"
"NOT ONLY ARE YOU A PSYCHO, YOU'RE A FREAKING VANDAL! WORSE, YOU SPRAYPAINTED THE ONE WORD I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE ON THE LOCKER ROOM WALLS! WHOEVER YOU ARE, YOU'RE GOING DOWN!"
"The name is Oda, Nobunaga Oda. And you three will be going down first!"
Oda then lunged at the Cures, who dodged him. Cure Fang said, "Damn, he really needs to control himself! Hey! Oda! Yes, you! You ever read the Bible? Well, there's this passage I got memorised, which sort of fits the occasion. Ezekiel 25:17.
"The path of the righteous man and defender is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the father of lost children.
"And I will execute great vengeance upon thee with furious anger, you who poison and destroy my brothers; and you will know that I am Chiba the Bodyguard when I lay my vengeance upon thee!"
"SILVER THUNDER! We who are different as day and night…"
"Do join together and combine our might!"
"PRETTY CURE METAL PUNCH!"
"I'LL GET YOU NEXT TIME, PRETTY CURE! NEXT TIME!"
Back at the ball, Ryan, Susan, and Kelly looked quite exhausted. Kelly herself noted, "We nearly fell in that tunnel the Fuma weirdo made a while back in his attempt to kill us. Then we figured out that Oda had gone through the tunnel to get into the school."
The principal said, "Yeah, I've been meaning to fill up that tunnel for about a week."
Susan said, "That's good. We certainly don't want any car accidents near the school grounds."
The three resumed their dancing with the other attendees at the ball.
